When Sarah Tippett first arrived at the construction site at the southern end of the city, she was surprised by the level of safety.
The city has strict regulations, and it was her first day as a construction inspector that Tippetts saw.
But as she learned more about the construction industry, the safety she encountered changed her life.
“When I first went into work I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t breathe,'” she said.
“But then I started going through the whole process, and I learned so much about how the industry is run.”
Tippets was part of a group of workers who made a pledge to uphold safety in the industry and work in a safe environment.
“We really were a little more cautious about how we approached the job and what we were doing,” she said of the first few weeks she worked in the construction sector.
“And then I realized I could see the benefits in it, and so I just wanted to do it.”
That passion for safety led Tippet to her first job as an inspector at the city of Vancouver.
She said she’s happy to be able to share that experience with others.
“I’m really happy that people can learn from my experience and learn from the mistakes that I made and what I learned,” she added.
Tippettes first job was as an inspection inspector.
The first thing she noticed was that she was in the thick of construction.
“You know, you get up in the morning, and you can hear people talking and yelling,” she recalled.
“It’s like the noise is the most dangerous thing you can be in.”
At the time, Tippes first job at the site was a temporary position, she said, but she quickly learned that she could have a permanent job in the building industry.
“For me, it was like being part of the team,” she explained.
“My job was to protect the building.”
She said being in the same building for so long was stressful.
“Because you’re doing something that people might want to be worried about,” she continued.
“They might be worried they might get hurt or something like that.”
When she was a kid, Tinkett said she wanted to be an actor.
She wanted to act out some of her favourite scenes from the movie “The Exorcist,” which she said is one of her favourites.
But she also wanted to go to school.
“Like, I was really into theater and I thought I should go to university,” she laughed.
“The whole reason that I was doing that was that I thought, ‘If I want to go there, I want a chance to get in,'” she recalled, adding that she eventually enrolled at a local theatre school and started attending school full time.
“A lot of times when you do theatre, you’re not in the studio, you don’t have a lot of opportunities to work on your craft,” she noted.
“That’s the one thing I wanted to learn from them because it’s something I was never comfortable with in my career.”
Tinketts first day on the site She said that she did a lot more research than she normally would, and she noticed a lot that was new and unique to the building.
“There was so much to look at and to learn,” she told CBC News.
She also noticed that the workers were a lot quieter, and that was a good thing.
“If you’re just working with the machinery, it’s not like you’re in the middle of a noise or a fire,” she remarked.
“So you can’t just sit there and talk to people and just say, ‘Hey, I think that’s a fire.'”
Tipps also noticed a different atmosphere around the site.
“Some of the guys, they were really quiet, and they weren’t even yelling,” said Tipp, who has lived in Vancouver since 2014.
“What you do, you learn from people.”
When Tipp was working on the new building that was going up next to her, she had a lot to learn.
“One of the things I found out about the building was that it was a little bigger than normal,” she remembered.
“In normal buildings, if you get a couple of people in, it would be a really, really big project, so it’s hard to do a lot.”
Tipping said she started working on her first project, a condo that would house some of the workers.
She noticed that a lot different people were hanging out at different times.
“Even in the beginning, I realized that there were some really nice guys, and then I noticed that there was also a lot less nice guys,” she shared.
“As a result of that, I just found myself not being able to interact with people.”
One of the main reasons she found it difficult to interact was because she was wearing her construction uniform, which she explained was designed to be a distraction for the workers and other people.
