New Delhi: Construction company Mortenson Construction has won approval to build 769 houses in the villages of Chhattisgarh’s Baraichi and Baraiganj districts for a total cost of Rs 9,965 crore.
The company said the construction of the homes is expected to begin in 2019 and finish in 2021.
It will have a site near Baraigli, in the Chhatti-Ganga river delta, and the company said it is targeting a total of 8,200 houses by 2022.
Mortenson has been constructing homes in Chhattistan since 2014.
The company had signed a three-year contract for the construction and was given a contract of Rs 1,200 crore.
The contract includes construction of 769 homes in Baraik, Chittagong, Baraikan, Barajigal and Bawadri districts.
Mantra Bhaag, the head of the Baraikh district, said, “We are confident in the project and are hopeful of getting this project completed by the end of this year.”
He said the houses would be built on land that is less than a hectare and will be affordable to the poor.
He said more than a quarter of the villagers are illiterate and they have to work in the fields for less than Rs 5 per day.
