A construction project has a different set of challenges than most: time.
Construction work can be exhausting, and many people have been forced to take time off work to care for family members, who may need to work longer shifts or work on weekends, to give them time to recover.
But as with any other job, there are many factors at play.
There is the construction itself, which involves thousands of workers at various stages of construction.
Then there is the schedule, which can be long, with long days and even longer nights, sometimes weeks.
And there are other factors.
Many contractors have noticed that, for some projects, there is little or no demand for the work they are doing, and some projects are getting little or nothing.
They say there is always an opportunity for the project to be delayed.
“When you have no demand at all, it is impossible to do the work you are doing,” said Scott Pomeroy, vice-president of real estate development at Lorne Contractors, which specializes in the construction of residential buildings.
In fact, Pomeroys contract involves about 80 residential projects.
And that includes many projects that were previously scheduled to begin next month.
“If the project is already on schedule, they just cancel it,” he said.
There are a number of factors at work in the way people respond to construction work, said Paul Smith, vice president of realty for the Canadian Association of Professional Engineers. “
You do get the idea that they have to do what they can to make it happen.”
There are a number of factors at work in the way people respond to construction work, said Paul Smith, vice president of realty for the Canadian Association of Professional Engineers.
They are motivated by jobs, for instance, and people feel they need to have a good time, he said, adding that this has been an issue in some construction projects.
It’s often a combination of factors, including the fact that the people who work on a project have no experience working on a job before, said Smith, adding they don’t have a lot in common with the people they are dealing with.
“It’s a lot about time management, and if you’re not prepared to make the commitment to work on the project, you’re just going to do something else,” he added.
“Theres also the question of how do you get the project done, and then it can be the most stressful thing that you’ve ever had to do.”
As with many other industries, the construction industry is in a period of transition.
It is a time when it is hiring for new jobs, as well as the construction workers themselves.
The Canadian Construction Association says it is seeing a decline in the number of new jobs over the last few years.
But there is no data available to show how much of that decline is due to people who want to leave the construction job and return to work, or how much is because the number is so low that it has been a “dead end” for many people.
Some people may be leaving the industry for a number in excess of 10 years, says Smith.
It also has been linked to an increase in suicides, including one that took place in 2013 in which a young woman, who had just graduated from college, killed herself.
“There is no way to tell if that is because they’re retiring, or they’re working longer hours, or because they feel the pressure, or just because they don.
Theres a lot that can happen,” he says.
In the case of the construction jobs, the real issue is that, with the economic climate changing, many people are looking to other areas of their lives, Smith says.
“People have got a lot on their minds right now, and theyre thinking about retirement, their kids, the work, their children.
It puts people at a higher risk of suicide.”
And while there are signs that people are coming back to the construction work they used to do, there seems to be a sense that there is a lack of commitment from those who have gone before, Smith said.
That is what led to a recent debate in the U.S. between two contractors who said they had been building homes for nearly 50 years and that they were tired of the “job of living” that is still required of them.
One of the men, Tom Kohn, said the work was hard and he had lost so much sleep trying to keep up with it.
The other, Scott Poman, said he was exhausted and had become “the type of person who can’t take care of himself.”
Poman said he had had a lot more to do in his life and felt that he could do better.
“I am tired of living in this kind of job,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“So, I am looking to find a new job.”
